Find Indoor Water Leaks Before It’s Too Late

Water leaks can be a major problem in any household. In fact, a typical home can lose anywhere from 2,000 to 20,000 gallons of water per year just from leaks. It’s important to find indoor water leaks before they cause damage to your home. Here’s how to check your home for leaks and save water.

• Check Water Supply Lines: Often, there can be leaks along the supply line leading from the meter to the home. Chances are if the meter box contains water, there’s a leak in the supply line. Leaks can also occur where the supply line enters the house or where the line surfaces from underground. Evidence of this type of leak can be found in soil around the supply line that is constantly damp.
• Faucet, Shower and Tub Leaks: Water leaks around faucets, showers and tubs are a common occurrence in many homes, but they are also simple to repair. A faucet with a slow leak can waste up to 1,000 gallons of water per year. There are four different types of faucets: compression valve, ball, cartridge and ceramic disk faucets. Repairs depend on the type of faucet.
• Toilet Leaks: Probably the most common type of leak that can be found in a home, toilet leaks can be difficult to find because they are typically silent and out of sight. About 20 to 35 percent of homes have some type of toilet leak. Toilet leaks typically have three causes:

1. Water level is adjusted too high
2. The refill valve is worn and needs replacement
3. The float is damaged

A leak in a larger toilet can be more easily detected by the hissing or gurgling sound that the valve emits constantly when the toilet isn’t being used. A smaller toilet may be more difficult to detect.
